Seniors Week Celebrations

The Seniors Week was introduced in 1999. A full week’s programme is organised in July each year with a wide range of activities and sponsorships from the local business organisations and community groups.

Seniors Services

The Shire cooperates with the CI Hospital and various community organisations including the CI Dance Troupe in delivering weekly Seniors Fitness Programmes, Seniors Line Dancing Sessions and Seniors English Skills Classes.

Seniors Association
The Shire has assisted the formation and incorporation of the Christmas Island Seniors Association in 2002.

Senior Citizens Centre
The Shire has initiated the establishment of a Senior Citizens Centre Building Fund in 2002 and continued to work towards developement of a Senior Citizens Centre. A grant application was lodged with the Department of Local Government and Regional Developement seeking funding through its Regional Infrastructure Funding Program to refurbish an old building as a Senior Citizens Centre. The application received support from the Department and was being considered by Territories Office Perth, formerly the Department of Territories and Regional Services (DOTARS), however was unfortunately unsuccessful.

In 2013, the Shire of Christmas Island was successful in its application under the Commonwealth Regional Development Funding Program (Round Three) for the construction of the Christmas Island Senior Citizens Centre building at the Poon Saan Community Hall. The construction of the new Senior Citizens Centre is now completed. The Senior Citizens Centre was officially opened on Friday 26 August 2016 at 9am by the Administrator, Mr. Barry Haase and the Deputy President of the Shire, Cr. Kee Heng Foo representing the Shire President, Cr. Gordon Thomson.

Seniors Transport Service
A twice weekly seniors transport service utilising volunteer drivers to provide convenience and access to shopping, visit to offices and library, medical appointments, banking and mailing at Post office etc. The service was introduced in late 2002 following a resident senior (the late Mr Gordon Valdare) donating a vehicle to the Shire for this purpose. The seniors’ transport services ceased in 2008 and proceeds from the sale of senior vehicle by public tender was transferred to the Christmas Island Seniors Association in 2009.
