Irvine Hill Upgrade

Irvine Hill is one of the primary roads used by mining road trains.

Over the years, it has been upgraded in stages for increased safety of

both mining road trains as well as road users.

Reconstruction of Gaze Road

Gaze Road is the main road through the village of Settlement.

Over the years, it has been reconstructed in stages.

Most recently the section was done between Gaze Road from VQ3

Accommodation and the Supermarket.

Northwest Point Road

With the commencement of the IRPC Project, heavy vehicles quickly saw the deterioration of Northwest Point Road.  As a result the road had to be closed down for maintenance and repairs.  This has been completed and now safe for road users.

Line Marking

The Shire has funding to repaint line marking twice each year.  However, Christmas Island has special features that make line marking fade more quickly than normal.  In particular:

  • the roads are mostly sealed with white aggregate, readily available on island and

  • the linemarking are quickly coated with phosphate dust, regularly present on island.
